9:00am- 9:15am Pioneer Square
Pioneer Square is Portland’s Living room. Central location, popular meeting spot. Max Lines. Info center, Starbucks, amphitheater and more. There are various events held at square (Lighting of Christmas Tree, national sand castle building competition, flower fair in spring, cultural fairs etc). History of Square: First owner purchased the block in 1858 for $24 and a pair of boots and built a school. It was then developed into a hotel, later a parking structure for Meier and Frank and eventually, in 1974, purchased by the city for public use. To help with the cost of construction people could buy bricks with their names inscribed.
9:15am- 9:45am Portland Rose Gardens
In 1888, Georgiana Burton Pittock, wife of pioneer publisher Henry Pittock, invited her friends and neighbors to exhibit their roses in a tent set up in her garden. Thus began the annual rose show for Portland Rose Society. Today there are over 550 varieties of roses on its 5.5 acres. There are many view points of the city and the Cascade Mountains Range. Including Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams and sometimes Mt. Rainier.
10:00am-10:30am Pittock Mansion
Built by Henry and Georgiana Pittock in 1914 this mansion overlooks the city and has architectural wonders. The mansion stands as a memorial to the Pittock family and is a part of living history of the city. Below the mansion you can view Nob Hill and the Pearl district with all its Boutiques on NW 23rd, with a variety dining places and a great location to feel the cultural hum of the city.
11:30am-1:00pm (Lunch) Mt. Angel (lunch is not included in the tour price.)
We will continue our tour with a visit to Mt. Angel Abbey which set high above Mt. Angel on a 300 foot bluff is a century old Benedictine monastic community built in 1883 by Swiss Benedictine monks. Views from the bluff include Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, as well as the lush Willamette Valley farmland. The beautiful library, designed by Alvar Aalto, stores a priceless collection of illuminated manuscripts, and features a display of rare, hand printed books. Guided tours can be arranged by appointment.
Then a short stop for lunch in Mt. Angel before heading to Silver Falls.
1:30pm- 3:30pm Silver Falls
During our visit to Silver Falls State Park, The Friends of Silver Falls will arrange an interpreted walks in the park (www.friendsofsilverfalls.net) through 10 majestic waterfalls, ranging from the grand South Falls (177 feet), to the delicate Drake Falls (27 feet). Four of these falls have an amphitheater-like surrounding where you can walk behind the falls and feel the misty, crisp spray. We will select the 4-5 most popular falls to visit.
4:10pm-4:45pm Oregon Hop Yards
Our final stop is in Hubbard, Oregon for a tour of Oregon Hop Yards. Dave Wills of Freshops will host a tour of Jeff Butch’s 4B Farms. and will share his knowledge and experiences. Oregon is known worldwide for the amount of hops produced and the cultural that exist in the industry. The majority of hop growing entities include third and fourth generation Oregon growers. Oregon produces approximately 17% of the U.S. market share, which is about 5% of the hops grown in the world.
